The Core Skills a CFO Needs to Be Successful

As a successful entrepreneur, I’ve had the opportunity to work with a lot of talented CFOs.

And while every individual is unique, there are certain core skills that I’ve consistently seen in the most successful CFOs.

In this post, I want to share those skills with you.

Let’s dive into the core skills that every CFO needs to be successful.

Strategic Thinking

One of the most important skills a CFO can have is the ability to think strategically. This means being able to look beyond the day-to-day tasks and see the bigger picture. It means being able to anticipate future financial needs and make plans accordingly.

A CFO who can think strategically is an invaluable asset to any organization. They can help the company make informed and data-driven decisions that will drive long-term success.

But strategic thinking isn’t just about looking to the future. It also means being able to understand the current financial landscape and identify opportunities for growth and improvement. A CFO who is skilled in strategic thinking will be able to spot trends, identify potential risks, and suggest solutions to help the company navigate these challenges.

Financial Acumen

Of course, a CFO must also be skilled in all things financial. This means having a deep understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting. It also means being able to analyze financial data and draw meaningful insights.

But financial acumen isn’t just about numbers. It’s also about understanding the business itself. A CFO who can connect the dots between financial performance and the overall health of the organization is incredibly valuable. They can identify areas of strength and weakness, and suggest ways to optimize performance.

I’ve worked with CFOs who were able to do just that. For example, one CFO I worked with was able to identify inefficiencies in our supply chain that were costing us money. By implementing some simple changes, she was able to significantly improve our bottom line.

Communication Skills

Strong communication skills are crucial for any leader, and CFOs are no exception. A CFO who clearly and effectively communicates financial information to a variety of audiences is invaluable.

This means being able to translate complex financial concepts into language that is easy for non-financial stakeholders to understand. It also means being able to present financial information in a clear, concise manner, whether in written reports or in person.

I’ve seen firsthand the power of strong communication skills in a CFO. One CFO I worked with was able to clearly explain the financial implications of a potential acquisition to the rest of the executive team, which ultimately helped us to save a ton of money.

As you can see, strong communication skills are essential for a CFO to be able to effectively collaborate with and lead their organization.

In my experience, the most successful CFOs are those who can adapt to change. The business world is constantly evolving, and a CFO who is able to pivot and come up with creative solutions to challenges is highly valuable.

This means being able to think on your feet and come up with creative solutions when faced with unexpected challenges.

It also means being open to new ideas and approaches, even if they differ from your traditional way of doing things.

In my opinion, a CFO who can lead and inspire their team is truly invaluable.

This means being able to communicate a vision and rally the team around it. It also means being able to empower and support team members, creating an environment where everyone can thrive.

A CFO who is able to lead and inspire their team can drive success not just for themselves, but for the entire organization. They can create a positive, collaborative culture that fosters innovation and drives results.

Final Thoughts

The most important core skills of a successful CFO are strategic thinking, financial acumen, strong communication skills, adaptability, and leadership. These skills allow a CFO to make informed, data-driven decisions that drive long-term success for the organization.

I’ve had the privilege of working with some truly talented CFOs who embody these skills. And I’ve seen firsthand the impact they can have on an organization.

I hope this post has given you a better understanding of the skills that are essential for a CFO to be successful.

If you’re a CFO looking to take your career to the next level, I encourage you to focus on cultivating these skills.

Trust me, they will serve you well.
