The 5 Main Characteristics of a Vision

A vision is a mental image that represents a desirable and possible future state for an organization. A vision is a representation of aspirations and goals for the future.

The five main characteristics of a vision are:

  1. A picture of the future: A vision should paint a clear and compelling picture of where the group or organization is going. This picture should be inspiring and aspirational, something that people can rally around and get excited about.
  2. A change in values: A vision should represent a change in values for the group or organization. This change should be meaningful, something that will make a real difference in how the group functions and operates.
  3. A map: A vision should provide a map of how the group or organization will achieve its goals. This map should be clear and concise, outlining specific steps that need to be taken to reach the desired destination.
  4. A challenge: A vision should represent a challenge for the group or organization. This challenge should be achievable but also ambitious, something that will push people to their limits and help them grow as individuals and as a team.
  5. An Inspiration: Finally, a vision should be an inspiration for people to strive for something greater than themselves. It should motivate people to take action and make positive changes in their lives and the world around them

A vision should be specific, realistic and achievable. It should also be inspiring and something that people can rally behind. A good vision statement will provide direction and inspire others to take action in pursuit of the desired goal.

Some characteristics of a good vision statement include:

  • It is clear and concise
  • It articulates a desired future state
  • It inspires others to take action
  • It is achievable and realistic
  • It provides direction

In other words, a company’s vision statement is a description of its long-term goals and aspirations. It also outlines its plans for the future, including how it will grow and make a difference in the world. Your mission is what your organization stands for. While your vision statement defines your goals and dreams for the future, it outlines what your organization does.
